322,000 people and is basically broken into three main regions
which are better known as the Iron Range, the Grand Rapids
area, and the Arrowhead (Duluth/Northshore Area). The counties
include Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and
St. Louis. In the warmer months popular activites include hunting,
fishing, camping, golfing, boating, water skiing, and making
use of the hundreds of miles of bike trails that are available.
When the weather cools down, ice fishing, curling, snowboarding,
hockey, and snowmobiling start to take precedence If you are
looking to take a vacation, raise a family, or are in search

The Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota
The Iron Range aquired its name because it is famous for mining
iron ore. There are currently 6 mining companies located on the
Iron Range. Being just 3 hours North of the Twin Cities the area
is becoming more popular and well known as a recreation destination.
Located in St. Louis County the Iron Range has over 2000 miles
of snowmobiling trails. In Gilbert there is a 1,200-acre Off-Road
Vehicle Recreation Center for ATVs and motorcycles. Also, the United
States Hockey Hall of Fame resides in Eveleth and right alongside
the Hall of Fame you can find one of the nicest curling facilities
in North America. The Range has many beautiful lakes and forests
and not to mention alot of history. If you have not been here,
be sure to take some time to check it out! A few interesting places
you may find yourself visiting are Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort
which is located near Biwabik, McCarthy's Beach State Park in Side
Lake, and Ironworld Discovery Center which is located in Chisholm. |

Grand Rapids, Minnesota
Grand Rapids and its surrounding area is known as the 1000 Grand
Lakes Area. In the Prentice Hall Publication of the 100 Best Small
Towns in America Grand Rapids was selected 49th. It offers many
modern conveniences but at the same time a nice touch of rustic
splendor. The town is located in Itasca County which has a population
of about 43,000 people. The area offers 1000+ lakes and around
a 1000 miles of snowmobile and ski trails. Grand Rapids is where
The Mississippi River begins its 2,500 mile journey down to the
Gulf of Mexico. Being a town of only 8,000 people Grand Rapids
offers plenty of variety and class. It is located an hour away
from both Bemidji and Duluth. |

Lake Vermilion, Minnesota
Declared as one of the most scenic lakes in the United States Lake
Vermilion is a 40,000 acre bed of water with 365 islands that stretches
approximetely 25 miles across the Arrowhead Region! It is located
30 miles north of Virginia and is well known for its walleye and
muskie fishing. Smaller surrounding communities include Cook and
Tower. Even though Lake vermilion is one of Minnesota's largest
lakes is considered navigable under almost all conditions because
of all of its bays and islands. With 23 resorts/lodges, a nice
selection of restraunts, and endless breathtaking scenery, Lake
Vermilion is a great place to be for summer fun. Fortune Bay Casino
has also been a huge draw to the area, and caters to those who
want to fish, swim, ski, golf by day, and have ongoing entertainment
throughout the evening. |

Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA)
Over one million acres in size, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area
(BWCA) resides between the borders of Minnesota and Ontario. It
is located near Ely and is part of the Superior National Forest.
The Boundary Waters is the most popular wilderness tourist destination
in the United States. The Boundary Waters region is characterized
by a vast network of waterways and bogs within a glacially-carved
landscape of Precambrian bedrock covered in thin soils and boreal
forests. It is well-known for camping, canoeing, fishing, as well
as for those simply looking for natural scenery and relaxation. |
